Disability (Short-Term & Long-Term)
Amgen’s disability benefits help preserve you and your family’s financial security if you have a major illness, injury or pregnancy-related disability. Disability insurance is designed to protect your ability to earn an income while unable to work.
If you will be out of work for less than seven calendar days, you should use your personal/family illness time. If you are out of work for more than seven calendar days, you become eligible for disability.
Company-Paid Disability Plans
- Short-Term Disability (STD) pays benefits of up to 100% of your base earnings for up to 60 days and 60% of your base earnings for days 61 through 90*. To be eligible, you must apply for a medical leave of absence and your illness or injury must be medically approved.
- Long-Term Disability (LTD) picks up where STD leaves off. If your absence beyond 90 days is approved, you may be eligible for the company-paid LTD plan, which includes benefits equal to 60% of your eligible monthly earnings, up to $25,000 per month. In most cases, LTD lasts as long as you are disabled or until you have reach your Social Security retirement age.
* Note that some states – such as California – have disability programs that coordinate with STD and LTD. In those instances, you receive payments from both your state agency and Amgen that collectively add up to your eligible payment amount. In addition, some states offer extended STD benefits. If this applies to you, your Amgen LTD benefit is offset as appropriate by this coverage.
