HCFSA Basics

An HCFSA lets you contribute money out of your paycheck on a pre-tax basis for out-of-pocket medical, dental and vision expenses. Depending on which medical plan you choose, your HCFSA works a bit differently.

  • If you enroll in the Traditional PPO or a regional HMO, or are covered by a non-high deductible health plan elsewhere, you can use your HCFSA as soon as funds are available for medical, dental and vision deductibles, coinsurance and copays
  • If you enroll in the Value PPO or a high-deductible health plan elsewhere, your account becomes a limited purpose FSA (LFSA) and can only be used for dental and vision expenses until the medical deductible is met

Eligible Expenses

There are many ways to use your funds on out-of-pocket expenses. Examples include:

  • Ambulance fees
  • Birth control pills
  • Chiropractic care
  • Contacts or glasses
  • Dental treatment
  • Hospital services
  • Prescription drugs
  • And more

One Chance to Choose

You can only enroll in the HCFSA during the new hire enrollment period and Annual Enrollment each fall, unless you experience a qualified change in status. If you elect the Traditional PPO medical plan, consider if an HCFSA is the right fit for you.
